OLD WORLD CUSTOM HOMES

Home Spotlight

Belgian Farmhouse in Canton, Ohio

It’s hard to believe this home is already (only) 5 years old. The Owner envisioned this home to look like an original farm cottage that has been updated and added onto over the years. A lime based stucco wash was chosen on the front to give a natural patina aged finish.

We are excited to present how our collaborative process brought everything together to produce this gorgeous home. Here is their story!

WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

Inspiration

Modern Farmhouses with Joanna Gaines inspired shiplap was all the rage when this home was built back in 2015, however this client wanted something different: A Belgian Farmhouse. What is that? Well that was new to us too, but armed with Instagram and Pinterest boards filled with inspiration photos the OWC design team quickly understood what a Belgian Farmhouse inspired homes was.

What we love most about this home is that it only gets better with age. As the landscape grows and exterior patinas the home melts into the natural surroundings. It truly looks like it has been there for 100 years or more!

THE CONCEPT

Floor Plan

At OWC we love old homes and their unique details, however one area where they always fall short is natural light. The key design element to this home was blending the outside landscape with the interior, which means large windows that wash the interior space with natural light throughout the day.

The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, but in this home it was taken to a whole new level. How often do you see a two story kitchen with a 12′ high eastern facing window that allows the morning sun to stream through as you sip on your coffee. The windows don’t stop there! They continue around all three sides of the kitchen, dining and hearth room allowing the light to cascade through the space throughout the day. In the summer the 12′ sliding doors open from the dining space onto a screened porch, which we are told is this family’s favorite room of the house. The Kitchen, Dining, & Combined Hearth room is a space they wanted to feel comfortable and inviting for everyday family use and for larger dinner parties – we think they nailed it!

The great room is sunken 1 step from the Foyer which allows your eye to look over the furniture and out the large window to their wooded backyard.  The room is the perfect mix of lakeside cabin and ski lodge with warm reclaimed timbers and 100 year old barn flooring mixed with cooling European Ledge stone surrounding the wood burning fireplace . The large sandstone hearth beside the fireplace is the perfect place to curl up with a glass of wine and book on a cold winter evening.

The Owners retreat feels like you are stepping into your personal mountainside spa every night. It has the perfect mix of spaciousness and warmth. The vaulted ceiling expanses from the bedroom the whole way into the bathroom. Although this is a large space the natural wood bed alcove and wood shutters that open into the tub give the owners retreat a warm and cozy feeling.

We love the overall natural flow between all the rooms in the house. We feel it is the perfect mix of an open plan where you always have a glimpse of what is going on in the next room, but the intrigue of not knowing exactly what is around the corner. This architectural drama is a delight to live in.

YOUR DREAM REALIZED

Forever Home

This home was just the first phase of how this family envisioned their 3.5 acres of property being used over the years. The land had a history of being used as farmland and they wanted to return a portion of their property to farmland. Earlier this year they did that. OWC constructed a barn on an acre of the land for their sheep, donkeys, and alpaca. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the next additions to their homestead!

This home is truly their forever home that only gets better as it ages and evolves as the needs of their family changes over the years.
